Color Theory Series: Yellow

Frances Munoz - Tuesday, March 30, 2010

With Summer just around the corner, we begin to think of bright colors, having fun and that nice hot sun. Yellow begins to pop up everywhere: in flowers, at the stores, in your clothes. And the reason…well because yellow signals to us the season of change when flowers bloom and the sun comes out and everything is so much brighter.

Yellow is a color that represents vitality, life and energy. It is also used to show enlightenment and curiosity. This is such a pop color and, just like red, it can be used to make a statement or to brighten up a piece as well as warm it up. When yellow is seen it demands attention being one of the brightest colors in the spectrum. Children absolutely love it and associate yellow with the sun, Big Bird and toys. It is also one of the easiest colors for the human eye to see. It brings our awareness to whatever piece it’s in.

Because yellow is such an intense color it often used in billboards and road signs because of its attention grabbing qualities. Especially when yellow is paired with black, it commands attention. Some examples of black and yellow together are bees, tigers, taxis and yield signs.

Yellow is suppose to stimulate the brain and mental awareness making you more decisive. But yellow can also be used to show warmth and relaxation. Think of Chardonnay, buttered popcorn and ale. It also can represent elegance like gold. Gold can be shown in many ways and used for a variety things. Its meaning also varies from rich and elegant to religious and joyful.

The feelings of comfort as the summer comes towards us all from the color yellow.
