Color Theory Series: Red

Color WheelAll colors have inherent meanings in them. The color you use in your materials can make people feel certain emotions. To start this color theory series, I am going to give you a little insight into the color red and its meaning.

Red. The color red evokes a range of feelings from love to hate.  Red is the attention getter. It’s bold, strong and demands a response. It causes us to fight or flee. It can represent blood and life as well as death. It is associated with war, energy, danger, strength and much more. It can be mouthwatering as in strawberries, apples or cherries. It’s all about movement and flow and making a statement.

As for the color itself, red is associated with the sensual, sultry, passionate and provocative. Colors in the red family, such as bright pinks, tend to have the same meanings and evoke the same emotions. Bright pink is a very standout color as is red. It is shocking and youthful, with very high energy. So if red isn’t your color, maybe it could be bright pink, magentas and fuschias. Darker reds tend to lend themselves to the rich, elegant and refined, while light pinks and rose colors carry the definition of sweet, nostalgic or baby-ish. Brick reds are very earthy and warm and give you feelings of comfort.
