Color Theory Series: Green

Frances Munoz - Tuesday, May 25, 2010

GreenGreen, Green, Green! Just like brown, green is a color we take for granted everyday. It’s everywhere we look on this earth. In the trees as you take a walk, the green grass of a park, the changing of seasons when the leaves get yellow green. All of these everyday things bring out feelings of newness, change, growth, healthiness and more. Green is the color that the human eye sees more than any other color. This is why it can evoke so many emotions.

Leafy greens represent growth, youth, and newness. There are different types of greens such as yellow green, dark green and others, which are represented in vegetables and teas. This foods help bring life and vitality, and alleviate stress by helping you relax.

Now in our society, everyone is trying to be “green." Green in the environment and green in our health. But green isn’t just about health and renewal, its is also very much in the imagination. Think dragons and leprechauns, imps and urchins, even Shrek which has become a hit movie because of lovable green characters. And you can't forget the ultimate green character, Kermit the Frog!

These types of green used for these characters make you love a character or hate a character. A dark green snake is scary, but a yellow green snake maybe not so much.

Turquoise is also in the family of the green, but it has some blue in it. It brings cool and refreshing thoughts to your mind. Turquoise used to be used as a talisman against evil by Egyptians, Greeks, Native Americans and other cultures.  It also symbolizes water and fertility as well as infinite possibilities because of its correlation to the sky and sea. There is also the meaning of deep compassion and healing, but also tropical and fun. The Blue Green color brings out the feeling of exotic places, deep clear water, and warmth…basically vacation time.

The color teal is a color that brings out confidence and elegance for people with more sophisticated taste. It is not a color that is ordinarily used. Just like the color olive green, which can mostly be associated with our military and camouflage. It also has has a very classic feel.

Emerald green is a very luxurious color. Think of an emerald ring, or the emerald city from The Wizard of Oz. It is a opulent color used for wealth and privilege.

Green is everywhere and one of the most everyday items we use that is green is money. You don’t notice it, but it brings about the things we have and the things we give. We give money to help sustain the world we live in, to help people, to be “green”, and we also need money to sustain ourselves, our families, our lives. Green has so many meanings: political, military, wealth, luxury, common, earth, cool, clean, fantasy and more. Its know wonder its the color we see most.
