Choosing Colors

Shala Graham - Tuesday, August 11, 2009

CrayonsI love color! Color has the power to evoke strong emotions, change meanings, calm the soul and communicate what words can't. Choosing the right colors for your project is critical, especially when designing corporate identity. Here are a few tips for choosing colors.

  1. Just because it is your favorite color doesn't mean that you should use it for your business. You may love soft pinks and yellow, but it's not appropriate for most professional businesses.
  2. Choose a color palette (not just a single color) that has primary and secondary colors, and sometimes an accent to help the main colors pop.  It's good to have contrast among your color palette so that you can have options for light and dark backgrounds as well as ensuring your design will translate well in grayscale, like when faxed.
  3. Don't be afraid to be just a little different, especially when you have a niche market. Yes, traditional corporate colors are navy blues, greens, grays, reds and sometimes browns among others, but you don't have to be strictly traditional to be respected. If you have a professional business, you can try a dark teal or dark turquoise instead of navy or a maybe a cognac or burnt orange instead of regular brown. Explore the world of color. There are far more options than found in your box of crayons.
