Is There Something Missing From Your Nonprofit Website?

Shala Graham - Wednesday, January 18, 2012

In a way, it can always seem like there's something missing from your nonprofit website. No matter how much planning and editing you do, it always seems like there's another feature, update, or idea that you could have implemented… or will need to in the future.

But it's precisely for that reason that some of the simplest things are the easiest to miss. For example, one mistake we tend to see over and over on nonprofit websites is that they are often missing contact details.

Very frequently, we come across nonprofit websites that have all of this information, but only on and within the main pages. In a perfect world, visitors would come to your website through the home page, click through to the area that they are most interested in, and find what they're looking for. In the real world, however, search engines, bookmarks, e-mail links, and other realities mean that you can't always be sure how or where visitors will come to your website—or that they'll be able to find pages that are immediately accessible.

That might not seem like a big deal, but how difficult do you want it to be for interested donors to give money, for foundations to find out who your directors are, or for media personnel to find the right contact? Think these issues through for a moment, and you'll begin to understand why it's important that visitors be able to find out how to reach you from any point on your website.

Even if it's as simple as a "contact us" tab that's visible from all points on the site, it should never take more than one or two mouse clicks for visitors to figure out how to give their time and/or money, who the key contacts are, and what your organization is really about.

If links to your mission, online donation pages, and contact details are missing from parts of your nonprofit website, then don't wait to have someone add them in. It might seem like a small issue now, but it could end up costing you quite a bit in missed connections later.
